Surf's Up Book

©Sony Pictures Animation/Columbia Pictures.
If you haven't gotten it yet, head on to Barnes & Nobles or Amazon and
grab Surf's Up - The Art and Making Of A True Story. It has loads of visual development pieces from the earliest concept designs to designing the waves. Here's a sample of my artwork inside - one of the main characters sitting on his ritualistic sandcastle while chanting to call the waves. Done in prismacolor on vellum. Enjoy the book. Below is the original Surf's Up design team doing research atthe Quicksilver surfing competition in San Onofre, California back in summer 2004. (l-r) Sylvain Deboissy, Paul Lasaine, Marcelo Vignali, Armand Serrano, and Ron Lukas.
Make a note on your calendars - movie comes out in the US and Canada on June 8. For worldwide release dates, click here.

I remember this drawing...too bad it didn't make to the film. You've gotta put your shark bar in here.

Armand. You managed to draw a penguin SITTING CROSS-LEGGED. My friend, I take off my hair in AWE. I thought it was IMPOSSIBLE, but you've proved me totally wrong. That is just one gorgeous piece of art and so evocative!

I cannot wait for the movie OR that book...and I have to wait till the end of JUNE to see the film! Bah!

Well, Shuku, that's the good thing in cartoons -anything is possible. I thought it would be funny for a penguin to do a yoga position. A bit tough to draw but it works. Thanks for the comment my friend.

Great drawing Armand!! My book is on the way as I type. Looking forward to seeing all the great art. Is this picture taken at Trestles. I've painted and drawn that mountain in the background from that very spot you are standing many times. That is a beautiful beach, and the waves don't get much better. I can see why you guys would go there for inspiration. Again, great drawing, super fun stuff!!

That penguin's got a great expression, Armand!
Especially, it works also if you don't think about the movie context, it's a very funny illustration itself! :)
Can't wait to see more, congratulations to all of you guys!

Always amazing! I can't wait to get the book! Quick question about materials. Are you using Prismacolor colored pencils or watercolor pencils or col-erase? Thanks for the inspiration!

Andrew,
I use colored prismacolor (Black). Hope everything's well with your family.

Craig,

Im not sure if it's part of the Trestles (or it could be since it's in that general area). As far as I remember, what you see from this angle is the two round nuclear power plant strucutre in San Onofre.
