Concept Art Should Have A Concept Not Just Art!

Started as a 30-minute spitpaint titled Royal Cat, this is 5 hrs later. I grew up watching romantic epic films from the past and as a kid, I'm a sucker for period uniforms and armors. The Queen mother stretches her arm straight and in formal pose signifies royal bearing and position. The daughter, the new queen, cannot be in contact with outsiders. The geometric silhouettes on the royalties signifies regimented, rigid, and very formal lifestyle. The profile of the Sphinx echoes the profiles of both queen and mother. This shows their family dynasty. The papyrus message is directly in front of the sphinx as if coming out of it's mouth. This shows that this message is honest as if coming also from the mouth of their ancestors. On the other hand, the Roman emissary and general behind him are in less formal poses and uniform showing less respect to the authority in front of them. Right hand on the gladius shows readiness and bit of distrust. General behind leans slightly to his left getting a glance of the new queen. Warm light behind the women for their warm hospitality. Cool light behind the Romans for their hidden intention. Visual Aesthetics for effective Concept Art is part of my lecture when I do Visual Development workshops. Fun exercise.

Leif Erikson Day!

Today is Leif Erikson Day. Not exactly sure why we celebrate him but I guess from some historians' belief that he could have discovered America and not Christopher Columbus after all. Either way, Vikings are always cool to draw! :)

A Simple Process

Another unused concept art from last year. The setting is suppose to be somewhere in contemporary Toronto during summer so I had to look for some online references. I've been asked a lot about my drawing/painting process so here's one of my simple, speedy but effective process. There's no secret other than first and foremost, lay out all the basics: readable shapes, composition, values and lighting; then proceed to color. I don't even think about textures and overlays for the most part since they're just secondary for me. Enjoy.

Draw the linework. Keep it loose and control the shapes and amount of details. Have fun like when you were a kid.

Apply values using the lasso tool. When done correctly, it gives controlled but bolder, even looser shapes than your line work. This is crucial for it is the very foundation your color. Define the skin tone of elements and apply consistent lighting.

Completed value.

Apply color without loosing the values. I don't use multiply but color brush instead.

Make adjustments in color balance and apply highlights. For those familiar with how I work, I use the old #19 preset brush. No fancy stuff :) Then on the finished piece, I did some last minute adjustments on the lighting for a slightly different time of day, added the ball, applied a simple texture overlay, then turned off the lines layer.

iPad Paintings: Procreate App

Been lazy with my iPad paintings lately. These are the more recent ones I did. One on top was a late night painting. One at the bottom is an early morning view of my backyard. Both done in Procreate app. Fun.

iPad Paintings: ProcreateHD and ArtRage Apps

First two artworks were done using my new favorite art app, Procreate HD. It has the easiest-to-use interface among painting apps out there. Plus amazing brushes and paint tools. It's hi res capability is perfect for the new iPad retina display. The third painting was done with ArtRage app. Artrage carried over its strong oil texture and behavior to this mobile app version. Fun.
